Orchard View Church is the practice facility for The Great Lakes Chorus!
The Great Lakes Chorus was formed in 1938, and in 1947 was chartered as the official Grand Rapids chapter of what was then known as the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America (now the Barbershop Harmony Society).. The chorus offers men the opportunity to learn barbershop harmony in a large group, helps them develop their skills, and encourages them to sing in quartets.
The Great Lakes Chorus is grant award recipient from the State of Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affair (MCACA) with federal support through the National Endowment for the Arts.

         NOVICES IN THE
       SCHOOL OF LOVE

Novices is a group of ordinary, everyday people who long for more in their walk with God.

An offshoot of the Grand Rapids chapter of The International Thomas Merton Society, Novices in the School of Love takes its name from the way monasteries have been described down through the centuries: schools of love. Places to learn the depth and breadth and profound meaning of God’s love. Because such learning is a life-long practice, we choose to consider ourselves novices - perpetually. Always learning. Always seeking to better ourselves. Novices in the School of Love. It fits.

We meet the fourth Wednesday of every month in the Community Room at Orchard View Church to discuss classic books of spirituality, monastic practices, The Rule of Saint Benedict (the governing structure for monastics worldwide for many centuries), contemplation, prayer, silence, meditation, and how to apply what we learn about monastic spirituality and the monastic life to our everyday, non-monastic lives. We also laugh a lot and build each other up in our Christian walk, which is a wonderful Holy-Spirit led benefit to gathering together with like-minded folks.

The group is facilitated by Jeff Maskow, who was a Trappist monk for a number of years in The Abbey of Our Lady Of Gethsemani in rural Kentucky - the same monastery where acclaimed author/poet/contemplative Thomas Merton lived for several decades before his untimely death in 1968.

Our monthly meetings start at 7pm and usually end around 9pm. They are free and open to anyone who desires to lead a deeper, more fulfilling spiritual life.
